4 Steps To Add Chainlink To Metamask

How To Add Chainlink To Metamask

Last updated on February 4th, 2022

You may want to add the LINK token to your Metamask wallet, which allows you to view LINK tokens that you’ve sent.

While you can perform a direct import of LINK via the Ethereum Mainnet, you will need to import LINK as a custom token on other networks (e.g. BEP20 or Polygon).

Here’s what you need to know.

You are able to add LINK to your Metamask wallet on any networks that are compatible with the Ethereum network (e.g. Polygon and BEP20). However, you aren’t able to add LINK to your Metamask wallet using networks that are not compatible with the Ethereum network (e.g. Solana and Terra).

There are many networks that you can add LINK to, which you can view on the LINK page on CoinMarketCap.

You are able to add LINK to networks that are supported by Metamask, which are mainly those which are compatible with the Ethereum network.

However, LINK can exist on other networks, such as Solana and Terra. You will not be able to add these versions of LINK to your Metamask wallet since Metamask does not support them.

Here are 3 steps to add LINK to Metamask on the ERC20 network:

  1. Go to your Metamask wallet and ensure that you are using the Ethereum Mainnet
  2. Select ‘Import Tokens’, and then search for LINK
  3. Confirm the addition of LINK to your Metamask wallet

Go to your Metamask wallet and ensure that you are using the Ethereum Mainnet

The first thing you’ll need to do is to ensure that you are using the Ethereum Mainnet on Metamask.

Metamask Select Ethereum Mainnet

This is the default network for all Metamask wallets. However, you are also able to connect Metamask to other blockchain networks, such as:

  1. Polygon
  2. Fantom
  3. Binance Smart Chain
  4. Avalanche

As such, do remember to be on the Ethereum Mainnet before moving on to the next step.

Once you’re on the Ethereum Mainnet, the next step will be to select ‘Import Tokens‘.

Metamask Select Import Token Ethereum

On the ‘Search‘ tab, you can search and select LINK as the token that you wish to import.

Metamask Search For LINK

The last step you will need to do is to confirm importing LINK one more time.

Metamask LINK Confirm

Once you’ve successfully imported LINK to your Metamask wallet, you should see it as one of your assets under the Ethereum Mainnet.

Metamask LINK Added

This process is similar to adding other tokens, such as RARI or MANA.

Here are 4 steps to add LINK to Metamask on the other networks:

  1. Go to Metamask and select the network which you wish to use LINK on
  2. Select ‘Import Tokens’, and then ‘Import Custom Token’
  3. Copy the contract that corresponds to the correct network from CoinMarketCap
  4. Double check that LINK is detected and select ‘Add Custom Token’

LINK can be added on various networks on Metamask, including:

As such, the first thing you will need is to ensure that you have selected the correct network that you wish to use LINK on.

Metamask Select Ethereum Mainnet

The Ethereum Mainnet is the default network for your Metamask wallet. As such, you will need to select the correct network that you wish to send LINK to.

Select ‘Import Tokens’, and then ‘Import Custom Token’

Once you’ve selected the network, the next step will be to select ‘Import Tokens‘.

In this example, I will be using the Avalanche network.

Metamask Import Token Avalanche

However, the same steps will apply if you’re using the other networks that you can add LINK on.

On any of these 4 networks, you will need to select ‘Custom Token‘.

Metamask Avalanche Import Custom Token

Copy the contract that corresponds to the correct network from CoinMarketCap

For the next part, you can go to the LINK page on CoinMarketCap.

I prefer using CoinMarketCap to obtain the contract address, as it is one of the most reliable sites with regards to cryptocurrencies.

It is important that you ensure that the site where you’re obtaining the contract address from is a credible source!

There is a section called ‘Contracts‘, where you’ll see the Ethereum contract for LINK.

LINK CoinMarketCap Contract 1

However, if you click on ‘More‘, you will be able to view the other contracts for LINK (such as Avalanche).

LINK CoinMarketCap Contracts More

You can click on the contract and it will be copied to your clipboard.

Once you’ve copied the Contract Address, you can paste it in the ‘Token Contract Address‘ field in Metamask.

Metamask LINK Autofill AVAX

If you pasted the correct contract address, LINK.e should automatically appear as the Token Symbol.

LINK.e is the bridged version of LINK on the Avalanche network.

After selecting ‘Add Custom Token‘, you will need to confirm importing LINK.e one more time.

Metamask Add LINK.e

Once you’ve successfully imported LINK.e to your Metamask wallet, you should see it as one of your assets under the Avalanche Network.

Metamask LINK.e Added

This is the same process if you wish to add TIME, MEMO or JOE to your Metamask wallet too.

Conclusion

LINK can be added to your Metamask wallet via the Ethereum network, as well as others including Avalanche and Fantom. This is similar to other multi-chain cryptocurrencies, such as ICE, SPELL or MIM.

Before you import the LINK token to your Metamask wallet, don’t forget to add the corresponding network to your wallet!

After adding and receiving your tokens to your Metamask wallet, you can consider using decentralised exchange (DEX) aggregators, including:

Since both platforms are DeFi aggregators, they will ensure that you will get the best rates for any swaps that you make!
